Slough Councillors' Questions - 7 February 2006

Question 3

From:  Councillor Satpal Parmar

The administration says it is committed to the green environment, surely the decision to reduce grass cutting and weed spraying, as well as charging for bulky waste makes a mockery of that pledge. Now you know the local government settlement will you agree to rescind these minimal savings which will have a massive negative impact on Slough's environment?

Reply: Councillor Duncan Buchanan

The proposals are only to stop one single grass cut out of sixteen and one application of weed killer out of five. This should have no significant impact on the appearance of the borough or its environment.

There is already a charge for most bulky waste and this charge has been in place for some years now. Benchmarking shows that Slough's charge is the lowest for miles around, and the increase brings Slough into line with other authorities locally and takes account of constantly rising costs. Pensioners will also now be asked to pay this reasonable charge, but the disabled will now receive this service for free, whereas in the past they had paid the full amount.
