Slough Residents' Questions - 20 July 2004

Question 9

From:  Mr Jason Roser

Does the council have plans to finish construction of the traffic island on Farnham Road next to the Safeway supermarket? Or is this a temporary measure whilst plans are formulated to convert the Farnham Road between the Texaco garage roundabout and the Three Tuns junction into 30 mph dual carriageway.

Reply: Councillor Dexter Smith

Thank you for your question. I can confirm that the traffic island is being constructed as part of a road safety scheme along the Farnham Road. Unfortunately, there have been a number of unexpected difficulties with construction, which have delayed completion of the project. We are advised by our contractor Slough Accord that the works at this island should be completed by the end of the first week in August.

We propose to remove the 20 mph speed limits that were introduced on the Farnham Road at it's junctions with Whitby Road, Buckingham Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue. These were introduced as part of a national trial by the Department of Transport, the results of which have indicated that speed limits over a wider area are more likely to be effective than those introduced at individual junctions. The Council nevertheless remains committed to the introduction of 20mph speed limits at locations such as outside schools and in residential areas, where the introduction of lower speed limits have been demonstrated to have considerable benefits in terms of road safety and community safety.
