Thank you for your question. Roads with the highest accidents will indeed be a focus for investment for the new administration. As you may know, the Council received a letter from GOSE, dated 19th December 2003, which stated that based on our own reported figures the Council is "well off-track" in achieving "the national target for reductions in Killed and Seriously Injured casualties (KSI)". The implication of the letter is that if the Council does not do something about this we may be punished in terms of future capital settlements. I am pleased to say that there are several bids that have gone forward to the new Star Chamber from my department that address this problem area. Since 88 out of 663 injuries on our roads during 2003 were to children, a particular focus will be on Local Safety Schemes and Safer Routes to Schools. |
