Slough Residents' Questions - 27 April 2004

Question 27

From:  Mr Jagroop Singh

Slough's south-Asian population which makes up nearly 30% of the local population (according to Census 2001 figures - Muslim/Sikh combined) is set to suffer more than most. With already record incidences of medical conditions such as heart disease etc. in the Slough area, they are additionally via their ethnic origin, a known high risk group. Will they not now have to face even greater health risks given that many studies point to the fact that incinerators of this type directly lead to higher death rates connected to heart disease?

Reply: Councillor James Swindlehurst

The additional risk of heart disease to Slough’s Asian population has been identified as a priority and local services are being developed for heart health promotion, as well as to improve treatment services for people with heart disease.

Regarding the proposed municipal waste incinerator, the report from the Division of Chemical Hazards & Poisons, London said that on the basis of current knowledge, it would appear that no significant health effects would be expected arising from the operation of this process.
