Slough Councillors' Questions - 1 March 2004

Question 22

From:  Councillor Paul Janik

As you are probably aware I have been complaining to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) about problems in the communal areas of the Wentworth Avenue flats. I did this after being told by the council to complain to someone else.

(a) Please explain why routine maintenance was not undertaken on the Wentworth Avenue flats for at least 2 years.

(b) Who specifically is to blame for the gross dereliction of the council's statutory responsibilities?

Reply: Councillor Rob Anderson

Slough through Interserve fm is carrying out routine maintenance within the Wentworth Ave block of flats.

A considerable amount of cost and effort is going into dealing with replacement/repair of services and fabric due to the extent of vandalism and wilful damage we are experiencing rather than general wear and tear repairs.

The HSE has acknowledged its acceptance of our actions taken to resolve the skips and trip concerns reported by Cllr Janik around the stairs in the common parts of the block and the upgrade to the door entry system.

They are also supportive of the holistic approach we're taking to deal with ALL the water drainage issues we have throughout the block.

As you are aware further to the above we received a petition from Cllr Janik and the tenants of Wentworth Ave last week. Therefore in addition to the work we are already doing around the common parts of the block we are co-ordinating a programme of individual property surveys to address the repair issues that have been brought to our attention.
