Slough Councillors' Questions - 1 March 2004

Question 19

From:  Councillor Paul Janik

I have been a councillor for a year. I honestly did not think I would last this long. It has been a very difficult and distressing year in which I discovered widespread Labour policy failures, gross mismanagement and contempt for the well being of ordinary residents.

To celebrate my anniversary Slough Borough Council provided responses to casework items submitted 8 months earlier.

The Chief Executive wrote to me she stating I should submit so called Casework to the Member Casework Officer for routine processing.

(a) Please explain why Labour's election agent Cllr James Swindlehurst is permitted by the chief executive to bypass the normal Casework procedure, jump the queue and proudly boast in the council chamber last October that all his Casework is done within 2 weeks whilst I have outstanding items over a year old.

(b) Is this another example of Labour's dirty tricks for political gain or the deliberate politically motivated sabotage of an opposition councillor's Casework?

Reply: Councillor Rob Anderson

There is a system which applies to all casework and is operated fairly between all councillors. There is often have difficulties with Cllr Janik's cases as when we check repairs he is reporting as overdue, they are not on the system, and so apparently not reported. He has received a lot of personal attention including site visits of very senior housing officers to try to deal with his work he is therefore preventing valuable work being done by taking up a disproportionate amount of time and effort.

Again as to whether a councilor is effective or not is a quality issue. Cllr Swindlehurst is by all measures a most effective councilor, Cllr Janik could learn a lot from his ability to be absolutely 100% a Labour Councillor. Yet be non-political and effective when representing his residents whatever their affiliations.
I would take your complaints more seriously if casework was reported to the casework officer rather than the picture editor of the local press. I notice there is not the same problems with the other ward councilliors. Perhaps if you feel embarrassed about asking one of us for help you could at least ask your fellow BILLD members for help as they do not seem to share either your failings or your camera-shy nature.
