Slough Councillors' Questions - 1 March 2004

Question 8

From: Councillor David MacIsaac

2 years ago I spoke to a Highway Officer about putting Give Way signs before the chicanes in Broadmark Road as cars frequently speed through to beat other cars. A site visit was conducted and found that the road was dangerous and changes would be budgeted for. Since then nothing has happened despite the issue being raised again last year. Can you advise if and when these changes will happen?

Reply: Councillor James Swindlehurst

Broadmark Road forms part of the first 20 mph speed zone constructed in Slough a number of years ago. The scheme has generally been successful and residents comments have been very positive. We are always anxious, however, to monitor performance of such schemes and we are presently undertaking a review of a number of past traffic calming schemes throughout the borough in order to assess if any improvement or alteration is recommended. The results of this review will identify alterations and prioritise the most urgent sites to ensure available funding is targeted at the most needy and cost effective measures which will deliver genuine road safety benefits in any given area.

The Council has also budgeted to apply new road safety measures to a zone in the town every year for the next twenty years (the programme will, in actuality, be implemented more quickly than this, as developer contributions will be added to the core funding already approved). This programme was taken to the Development & Customer Care Scrutiny Committee last year and endorsed by members. The aim of the programme is to ensure that the zones are prioritised on the basis of road safety benefit - so that the measures which are most likely to stop speed-related accidents in black-spot areas are the first to be installed.
