Cookies

A Cookie is a piece of data. It is named after an American biscuit and its name suggests something nice and enjoyable. Cookies are created, usually without your explicit knowledge, by some web sites you visit. These are normally large web sites including government, broadcasting and commercial sites.

When a Cookie is created by a site, its purpose is to identify you and to track your browsing on the Internet. Some Cookies are intended to be read only at the site which created them. However some sites create Cookies designed to be read by any site you may visit. The bugs in many versions of Internet Explorer mean that Cookies intended to be read only by the site which created them can be examined by other unknown and unrelated web sites.

When a web site creates a Cookie it uses your browser to store that Cookie on your computer's hard disk where it may stay for an indefinite period of time unless you are using a browser like Firefox. The excellent free Firefox browser is available for a variety of different operating systems including Linux and Windows and can be downloaded from

www.mozilla.org

The Firefox browser allows users:

  • to stop Cookies
  • to restrict Cookies to the originating web site
  • to request the user's permission before storing a Cookie
  • to limit the duration of a Cookie to a predetermined number of days
  • to delete all Cookies when the Firefox browser is closed down.

Cookies are NOT used in any pubic accessible part of our web site.

Passwords

When you enter a User Name the server log will contain, for every password-protected web page you access, your User Name.

Your password is NEVER displayed in the server log. All passwords are stored as encrypted data. Extra security precautions prevent unauthorised persons accessing the password file.
