CLOSURE OF LEA INFANT AND JUNIOR SCHOOLS
AND OPENING OF A NEW ISLAMIC FAITH SCHOOL


Part 1 – Closure of Lea Infant and Junior Schools

Notice is hereby given in accordance with the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 ("The Act"), that Slough Borough Council intend to make the following changes:

(A) In accordance with section 29(1) of the Act to discontinue Lea Infant School, Wexham Road, Slough, Berkshire, SL2 5JW with effect from 01 September 2008. All pupils attending the school will be offered a place at the new school. Those who do not wish to transfer will be offered an alternative place at a Slough school. There will be no impact on the current Home to School transport arrangements.

(B) In accordance with section 29(1) of the Act to discontinue Lea Junior School, Grasmere Avenue, Slough, Berkshire, SL2 5JD with effect from 31 August 2008. All pupils will be offered a place at the new school. Those not choosing to transfer will be offered a place at an alternative Slough school. There will be no impact on the current Home to School transport arrangements.

Within six weeks after the date of publication of the above proposals, any person may object to or make comments on the proposals by sending their representations to

Within one month after the end of the representation period, the LEA will send to the School Organisation Committee for the area copies of all objections and comments made (and not withdrawn in writing) within the representation period, together with the Authority's observations on them.

Part 2 – Opening of a new Muslim faith primary school on the Lea Schools’ site

Notice is hereby given in accordance with the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 ("The Act") that Slough Islamic School Project propose:

  1. In accordance with section 28(2) of the Act to establish a new Voluntary Aided Primary school for 630 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 11 from 01 September 2008.
  2. The new school will be situated on the current Lea Infant and Junior School campus. The number of pupils to be admitted to the school at age 4 from 01 September 2008 and in subsequent years will be 90.
  3. The admission arrangements for the school will not make provision for selection by ability. The admissions authority of the proposed school will be the Governing Body. The new school will be an Islamic school and will provide a religious environment according to the Holy Koran and Sunnah.
  4. Slough Borough Council's Home to School transport policy will apply. All pupils due to attend Lea Infant and Junior schools from 01 September 2008 will be offered a place at the new school.
  5. The school will include a centre of excellence with a multi-faith ethos to ensure respect for all faiths. It will create links with other local schools, including those of other faiths, and local community groups to promote tolerance, understanding and cohesion within the school and community.
  6. The school will be in a new building conforming to the latest standards and will replace the current buildings which are in poor condition.

Explanatory Notes

1. Lea Nursery will remain a community school but may be rebuilt as part of the overall project.
